Kyōto Ryōzen Gokoku Shrine

Kyōto Gyōzen Gokoku Shrine is dedicated to Japanese who have died in war or other combat in service to the country. This includes such conflicts as the Russo-Japanese War and the Pacific War, but this shrine was originally dedicated to and remains most famous for those who died bringing about the Meiji Revolution of the mid 19th century. It was this event that propelled Japan into modern times and away from feudalism. Many of the revolutionaries from that time have graves here, including Sakamoto Ryōma, perhaps the most famous of them all.
